I went out to a meetup this evening, after moving all my research stuff back onto the table from the library. I had a good time, but my lungs just ached from being outside the house for the length of time it took me to drive down to Lynnwood.

Most of the past week, our entire area has been under an air stagnation warning. What this means is that we've been socked in with fog that has an awful lot of nasty particulate matter in it. The air has been more toxic slurry than anything else, and I really feel bad for my friends with asthma and other lung conditions. I'd been tolerating it moderately well until today -- I wasn't out of the house for more than five minutes before my lungs started to ache.

Thankfully, NOAA suggests it's going to clear by mid-day Tuesday, so I'm hoping we'll have either some rain or a good wind to blow this shit away. It happens most winters, though I don't remember it having been this bad in quite some time. It's the sort of fog that puts one in mind of London pea soup in Sherlock Holmes stories. Visibility is low even during mid-day and at night it's nearly hopeless.

I don't mind actual fog, composed of mostly water vapor, but this -- with the extra added attraction of turning into black ice on my parking lot -- has been awful. I can't wait for it to be over with.

Tomorrow: research and steampunk social.
